AQA GCSE Poetry Exam

Death Of A Naturalist.

Make a list of things you may have done/played with when you were a child, but would not enjoy now.

  • Watching kids TV programmes. E.g. "Barney", "Teletubbies", "Tweenies", and "Pingu", "Tots TV"
  • Playing with Barbie dolls.
  • Playing with Tinky Winky.
  • Playing in my dolls house.
  • Playing on my swing.
  • Getting muddy!
  • Jumping in puddles!
As you grow up, how do your feelings change about these things?

  •  My feelings have changed because I hate getting dirty and I'm much more mature now. E.g. I watch more grown up TV programmes now, and I don't tend to play with toys no more.

Some Early Thoughts

  • I think that the poem is about a bit of an adventure and growing up. This is because the poet talks about how as a child, he came across one day, of frogspawn and became very interested in dirty things like swamps, and frogs.
  • The opening lines evoke nature beatifully. This is because Seamus Heaney uses images such as ' bubble gargled delicately'. It creates a calm image where everything moves slowly due to heat.
